Overview

Doom Eternal is a sci-fi fantasy horror first-person shooter developed by id and published by Bethesda for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Google Stadia on March 20, 2020. A Nintendo Switch version is in development (by Panic Button).

The fifth main installment of the Doom series and the direct sequel to the 2016 game Doom, Doom Eternal is the first game to run on the id Tech 7 engine and revamps the predecessor's mechanics (including an updated weapon roster, new mobility options, a new assortment of monsters, and new upgrade systems).

Set sometime after the Doom Slayer recovered the Crucible and closed the rift between Mars and Hell, Doom Eternal takes place during a time where most of Earth have been conquered by a demonic invasion (similar to Doom II: Hell on Earth). Players reprise the role of the Doom Slayer, now in command of his own massive Sentinel space station (the 'Fortress of Doom') as he hunts down the three Hell Priests commanding the invasion (as well as their leader, the Khan Maykr). Some of the background lore from the previous game (including the Night Sentinels) is explored more directly in this installment.

Unlike the previous installment, the game includes no competitive multiplayer or level creation system on top of the main campaign. Instead, the game includes 'Battlemode', an asymmetrical multiplayer round-based arena mode where one 'Slayer' player is pitted against two 'Demon' players (each of them controlling an enemy directly, similar to the Demon Rune of the previous game, while being able to summon minions). An 'Invasion' mode is in development, allowing 'Demon' players to infiltrate the single-player campaigns of other players (similar to the Souls series).

Those who pre-ordered the game received a copy of the updated port of Doom 64 for free.
